“When I was a boy, and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ – Fred Rogers
Mister Rogers. A friendly, calming reminder of a simpler time. It was always a beautiful day in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. As our world changes around us, it’s comforting to remember to “look for the helpers.”
Look for the Helpers
Although hard to believe sometimes, there are always helpers. In Bloomington-Normal, P/L/R Insurance is one of the best.
“As an insurance agency, we’re ‘helpers’ by nature,” says P/L/R President Bill Lawrence. “But for us, it’s about so much more than just making sure that our clients have the right life, home, and auto coverage. We care about our whole community, and we walk that walk every day.”
“One of the things that sets our agency apart from the crowd is our commitment to a higher purpose. Everybody is busy. That’s a fact. If you want to be a “helper,” you have to be intentional about it.”
Right here in our community, there are dozens of organizations that help those who need it, and in return, they need community support.
The Baby Fold.
The Boys and Girls Club.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
The Red Cross.
The list of organizations that need our support goes on and on, and no one person or one organization can help everyone who needs it. However, a whole community working together can make a tremendous impact.
Go All In
“We’re fully engaged,” Lawrence continues. “In partnership with my wife, Jan, and on behalf of P/L/R, we support the organizations that feel right to us. We’ve been married for nearly forty years, and she has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever known.”
“Over the years, the two of us have served on the boards of many local organizations. We served at the Chamber of Commerce, at the Economic Development Council, at The Baby Fold – and right now, we’re donating our time, talent, and treasure to help The Boys and Girls Club and the YWCA.”
As the Lawrence family has grown and changed over the years, so has the focus of their charitable work. “At this time, giving back to organizations focused on helping children is what feels right for us,” Lawrence said.
“Children can’t help themselves. Sometimes, they don’t even know what’s wrong; they just know that something isn’t right. They need adults to step up, step in and offer positive examples and experiences for them.”
Live Your Values
The Lawrences, along with the entire P/L/R staff, are committed to helping out in the community. “It’s not only the right thing to do,” Lawrence says, “it’s also a meaningful way to set our agency apart from the crowd.
“To be sure, it’s not just Jan and me. Everyone on our staff is involved in some sort of community service that feels right for them. At P/L/R, we live our values.”
If those values are important to you, join us in walking the walk. Decide which organizations have a mission that speaks to you and step up, step in and help them. Support the businesses that support the causes that are important to you. And whenever you see something scary happening around you, remember Mister Rogers and look for the helpers.
Chances are, you’ll see someone from P/L/R.
