Ergonomics Important in all Illinois Workplaces

Ergonomics Important in all Illinois Workplaces

You’ve probably heard people use the word ergonomics in reference to their office chair. However, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, ergonomics is much more than just that. Ergonomics is “fitting the job to the person.” A more exact definition, coming from Merriam Webster, is “an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely.”

In recent years, “ergonomics” has become something of a buzz word in office settings. While not thought of as physically taxing, the day-to-day lack of movement and hours of sitting can cause discomfort and pain for workers. And ergonomics is the solution!

See below for PLR’s list of ergonomics tips!

Ergonomic Tips from PLR

  1. Always be aware of how you are sitting. Some positions, while comfortable initially, can do damage to your body over time. The monitor should be an arms length away from your face, your arms and legs should be at 90 degree angles, your lower back should be pressed firmly against the chair, and your feet should be flat on the ground or on a small stool.
  2. Move as much as possible. While this can be difficult during busy days, the more you move, the better off you’ll be!
  3. Outside of the office, it’s important to exercise regularly. Regular exercise can help to cancel out the effects of the extreme sedentary lifestyle that’s a part of office life. Aerobic exercises and exercises that help to strengthen your core are especially helpful (yoga, weightlifting, and cardio).
  4. If possible, ask your employer about a standing desk. Some employers may provide a desk to their employees for free–but you never know unless you ask. If you think a standing desk will benefit you, talk to your doctor and supervisor about getting one.
