Being involved in the insurance business has its perks. One of these is the amount of information that we at PLR have access to on a day-to-day basis. It’s interesting for us to look at insurance trends and see how they are affected by different factors.

During the winter, one thing we tend to see in Bloomington-Normal is an uptick in car insurance claims as a result of the dangerous winter driving conditions. For help dealing with these, please see our list of winter driving tips below!

1. Always Have at Least Half a Tank of Gas

While the dangerous driving conditions are what cause the accidents, what can actually be more dangerous is the low temperatures outside when something happens. Being exposed to dangerously low temperatures after an accident can lead to problems like frostbite or hypothermia. To combat this, make sure your car always has at least half a tank of gas. That way, as long as the damage to your car wasn’t excessive, you can wait in your warm car until help arrives. You should also keep extra blankets and additional winter clothing in your car too!

2. Slow Down

One thing that regularly causes accidents during the winter is people driving too quickly. Simple solution right? Just slow down. But sometimes, that means you need to make some lifestyle adjustments.

If you’re the type of person who leaves late and drives quickly to get to places, plan accordingly. Set your alarm clock ten minutes early so that you have plenty of time to get to your destination. Most importantly, stay hyper aware of what’s around you. Even when driving slowly, it can be easy to lose control in wintery weather.

3. Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

Before you make a journey in dangerous weather conditions, make sure you have your trip planned out. Try and avoid routes with lots of hills or sharp turns as these are areas where accidents are likely to happen. Lastly, if there is no safe route or the weather is too dangerous, simply stay home. Nothing is worth risking your life over!
