Regular readers of our blog will remember that we at PLR love to volunteer our time. While giving back to the community in any way is always good, sometimes it’s better (and more fun!) to volunteer in a group through an organization! Often, employers even offer a certain amount of time off, separate from vacation time, so that their employees can volunteer and give back to the community. See the list below for great organizations to volunteer with in Bloomington-Normal!
For no bigger than it is, Bloomington-Normal has a couple really cool museums! The Mclean County Museum of History is full of rich exhibits that detail the history of McLean County, while the Prairie Aviation Museum has a variety of awesome and amazing aircraft. Both are always looking for volunteers, so if you have a penchant for history and education, this is a good way to help out.
Maybe volunteering with people isn’t your thing. If that’s the case, you should look into volunteering at Bloomington’s famous Miller Park Zoo. If helping smaller, more cuddly animals is more your style, the Humane Society of Central Illinois and the Central Illinois Small Animal Rescue and Care Center are both in need of help!
While homelessness may not be as visible in Bloomington-Normal as it is in bigger cities like Chicago and St. Louis, homelessness does not discriminate by location. While there are a number of organizations doing excellent work to combat poverty, two of the more well-known are the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Salvation Army.
If none of these sound good to you, you can use VolunteerMatch to find a cause that you would like to help. You will have to create an account but logging in and searching are both relatively simple. Overall, we at PLR feel that it isn’t so much where you volunteer that’s important but that you are volunteering. Even a couple of hours a month can make a big difference in Bloomington-Normal!
