Getting a driver’s license has long been a rite of passage for adolescents in the United States. However, for parents of new drivers, having a teenager behind the wheel can be a scary thing. In the Bloomington-Normal area, the large number of one-way streets and weather conditions can add extra challenges for new drivers. To combat these and other challenges, PLR Insurance has assembled this list of helpful tips to ensure that new drivers stay safe!
Always Buckle Up
Seat belts save lives! Not only does wearing a seat belt drastically decrease risk for both drivers and passengers, but in Illinois, wearing your seat belt is the law. New drivers should get in the habit of always clicking it early.
Practice Driving on One-Way Streets
Bloomington-Normal has a LOT of one-way streets. One-ways typically have more vehicles that are travelling at higher spends than two-way streets do. In addition, one-ways make navigating to a destination more difficult. Make sure that your teenager gets plenty of practice driving on one-way streets!
Don’t Text and Drive
Much like with not wearing a seat belt, using a cell phone while driving is both dangerous and illegal in the state of Illinois. If your teenager is glued to their phone, encourage them to download one of these helpful apps to stop them from getting distracted by their phone while driving.
Get Experience in All Weather Conditions
Whether it be rain, sleet, snow, or shine, Bloomington-Normal and the midwest gets all kinds of different and sometimes hostile weather. Some of these conditions are more challenging to drive in than others. Make sure your teenager gets some practice driving in all of these conditions with an experienced driver before having to handle them on their own.
