While residents of the midwest have to deal with inclement weather all year ‘round (yay midwest!), storms are especially dangerous during the spring and summer months.  From high winds and hail to thunder, heavy rainfall and even tornadoes, summer storms produce all kinds of different risky conditions.

At PLR, we realize that the Bloomington-Normal area is no stranger to storms. Despite this, it never hurts to brush up on safety information!

5 Storm Safety Tips from PLR

  1. If the storm is primarily heavy rain, thunder, and lightening, stay indoors. Pick a place in your home that you and your family can meet. This should be away from windows and other large pieces of glass that could be broken.

  2. If the storm includes heavy winds or may produce tornadoes, a basement truly is the safest spot. Once you’re in a basement, stay away from windows and try to shield your body using furniture or other heavy objects. If you are unable to make it to a basement, crouch down where you are and cover your head with your hands.

  3. If the storm includes hail, once again, try and stay away from all windows. If you are in a car when heavy hail starts, attempt to seek shelter under a bridge or other large structure. Always keep a blanket in your car. If you are unable to find protection for your car, covering yourself with a blanket could help protect you from broken glass.

  4. Keep all tree limbs short and trimmed. Some storms can cause limbs to come loose and do damage.

  5. No matter the type of storm, you should always have a number of safety items inside your home. These include a flashlight, candles in case of a power outage, and wireless radio.
