What type of coverage can we help you with?

October is fire prevention month.

October is Fire Prevention Month and, although it is important to be vigilant of fire safety year round, there’s no better time to make sure your fire prevention tools are up-to-date and your family members are educated on all things fire-safety related! According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there were 1,345,500 fires in 2015. These resulted in deaths, injury, and the loss of over a billion dollars in property. Fires DO happen and it’s important to protect you and your home against them. Read the information below from PLR to find out what you need to do this October to ensure maximum safety!

1: Make sure all equipment is up-to-date

Checking equipment is one of the most important parts of Fire Prevention Month. Make sure you have at least one working fire extinguisher at your residence. In addition, you should have a number of smoke detectors (make sure you check the batteries!) spread evenly throughout the house, as well as a carbon monoxide detector.

2: Make sure all children are educated

If you haven’t had a fire-safety talk with your children, now is the perfect time to do so! If you have especially young children, you’ll want to show them how to stop, drop, and roll, as well as how to dial 9-11. Ensure that even your older children are familiar with your escape route and how they can find you once outside.

3: Make sure all adults are educated

Fire prevention is important for adults too! According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over 50% of all residential fires are caused by cooking, with another 7% resulting from carelessness. Never leave cooking food unattended. If you smoke cigarettes, be careful about where you do it (never around gas or flammable material) and how you dispose of it. Lastly, don’t empty hot barbeque or ashes into a combustible container.

4: Make sure your home is insured

Whether you live in a house or an apartment, it is important that you have insurance to protect your residence and belongings. Luckily, PLR is here to help! If you have a house and are interested in getting it insured, click here, fill out a form, and an agent will contact you shortly. If you have an apartment, click here.
