What type of coverage can we help you with?

John Lawrence leaning against brick wall

At PLR, we believe that no two people’s insurance needs are the same. Because of that, we start every new relationship with a conversation. We want to know about you: your work, your life, your family.

So, it’s only fair that we allow you the opportunity to get to know us. To that end, we’ll be periodically profiling PLR’s awesome staff. This week, we sat down with one of our insurance agents and the son of PLR’s owner,  John Lawrence.

PLR: Can you tell me a little bit about how you got started? Where did you grow up? Was there an experience from your childhood that made you want to follow in your dad’s footsteps?

John Lawrence: I grew up in Macomb, IL. I lived in Macomb until I graduated high school and then I moved to Chicago to study at Columbia College.

I always thought about following in my dad’s footsteps, but I thought it would be in the restaurant industry. He owned a restaurant while I was growing up and I spent a lot of time there. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and being around all the clients. I never envisioned myself joining the insurance industry, but as I grew older, it seemed like a great career opportunity.

PLR: Can you tell me about your life before working at PLR Insurance? Did you have any experiences in high school or college that helped lead you to your position?

JL: Before PLR, I was managing some properties that my dad and I owned in Chicago. It was a lot of work and weird hours. I wanted to find something steadier and get out of the city. After a few years of discussing the transition with my dad, I moved to Normal and began working in the industry.

I think working with insurance companies during a few of the claims we’ve had made me realize how valuable this intangible product really is. It also made me realize how horribly wrong a claim can turn if your coverage is inadequate. Luckily, I always had great coverage!

PLR: What’s your life like outside of working for PLR?

JL: I am actually pretty boring outside of work. I enjoy spending time with my wife Corinne and our families.

Corinne and I enjoy traveling and cooking. We try to travel as much as possible and plan to go to Europe for our next trip. Whenever I get a chance, I try and get out to the golf course, but I am finding the chances are becoming less frequent!

PLR: What’s your current job at PLR and what does it consist of? Can you tell me what a typical day looks like?

JL: My current job at PLR is everything. I do sales, servicing, accounting, and I help run the day to day operations.

My typical day is a lot of emails/phone calls and traveling to visit clients and prospects. We are steadily growing our book of business and that keeps me very busy!

Our dog, Winnie, has become PLR’s unofficial office mascot.  She loves to meet all our customers—stop by and say hello!

PLR: What’s your favorite thing about working in the insurance industry? Least favorite thing?

JL: Hands down, my favorite thing is working with my family. My mom also works in the industry, so it’s really nice to be able to work alongside her and my dad and learn from people that I trust.

My least favorite thing is when a customer has had a bad experience or has felt taken advantage of by a previous agent. When that happens, we have to work harder to educate them on the product and gain their trust back. At PLR, we work hard to constantly strive to learn more about how our products can help meet our customer’s needs, and then work to translate that into something that everyone can understand.

PLR: What else would you like to tell about you and PLR Insurance?

JL: We don’t just talk about learning our products and working harder, we do it! I recently received my CIC designation (Certified Insurance Counselor) in less than 13 months. This class can take up to five years for completion.  I am currently working on obtaining my CRM designation (Certified Risk Manager), and I hope to have that completed by 2020.

We are a small, family run organization that strives to do the very best we can for our clients. We are dedicated to making our clients’ experiences better!
